Express Entry is Canada's primary system for managing applications for permanent residence under three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTC), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Since its launch in January 2015, it has become the fastest pathway to Canadian permanent residence for skilled workers worldwide.
How Does Express Entry Work?
When you apply to Express Entry, IRCC creates a pool of eligible candidates. Each candidate is assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on factors like age, education, work experience, and language proficiency. IRCC holds regular draws from this pool — called rounds of invitations — and invites the highest-ranking candidates to apply for permanent residence.
The CRS Score — What Counts?
- Age: Candidates between 20–29 earn the most points (up to 110)
- Education: A doctoral degree earns the maximum points (up to 150)
- Language skills: Strong CLB scores in English and/or French are critical
- Canadian work experience: Each year of skilled work in Canada adds significant points
- Skill transferability: Combinations of factors can earn up to 100 bonus points
- Additional points: A provincial nomination adds 600 points — virtually guaranteeing an ITA
Tips to Improve Your CRS Score
If your CRS score is below the typical cut-off, there are several legitimate strategies to improve it. Retaking your IELTS or CELPIP test to achieve higher CLB scores can add significant points. Pursuing a provincial nomination through a PNP stream aligned with Express Entry is one of the most effective strategies, as it adds 600 points to your score.
Other options include improving your French language scores (which can earn you up to 50 bonus points), completing a Canadian educational credential, securing a qualifying job offer from a Canadian employer, or having a sibling who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (15 bonus points).
