Becoming a Canadian citizen is one of the most significant milestones in an immigrant's journey. Canadian citizenship grants you the right to vote, hold a Canadian passport, and live and work anywhere in Canada permanently — with no conditions on your status.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a permanent resident of Canada
- Have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the last 5 years
- Have filed Canadian taxes for at least 3 years in the last 5 years (if required)
- Be 18 years or older (minors can be included in a parent's application)
- Demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French (CLB 4 minimum)
- Pass the citizenship knowledge test
- Not be prohibited from applying (e.g., under a removal order or convicted of serious crimes)
The Citizenship Test
Applicants between 18 and 54 must pass a citizenship test. The test is based on the official study guide 'Discover Canada' and covers Canadian history, values, institutions, and symbols. It consists of 20 true/false and multiple choice questions, and you need to score at least 15/20 to pass.
The Citizenship Ceremony
After passing your test and interview (if required), you will be invited to a citizenship ceremony where you take the Oath of Citizenship. This is the final step in becoming a Canadian citizen. Ceremonies are held virtually or in-person, and you will receive your Canadian citizenship certificate on the day.
